The Hutton-Mdivani Jade Necklace

A Legend of Luxury

Sold at auction for $27.44 Million

The Hutton-Mdivani Jade Necklace is one of the world’s most famous jade pieces. Made in 1933 for heiress Barbara Hutton, it features 27 glowing green jadeite beads (each flawless and vivid) linked by a diamond-and-ruby clasp. The jadeite came from Myanmar’s mines, prized for their rare “Imperial Green” quality.

Why it’s legendary:

  • History: Gifted as a wedding present, it symbolized wealth and power.
  • Auction fame: Sold for $27.4 million in 2014, breaking records for jade jewelry.
  • Cultural blend: Combines Asian jade with Western Art Deco glamour.

In the 1920s-1930s, Art Deco design loved bold shapes and exotic materials. Cartier used jadeite because:

1.    Rarity: Jadeite’s vivid green symbolized luxury.

2.    Cultural craze: Europe was obsessed with Asian art. Jade linked designs to “mystical” China.

3.    Contrast: Cartier paired jadeite with diamonds, onyx, or enamel for striking geometric patterns.
